I think Professor Guroian is spot on in describing the state of many modern young business men and women as acedia. Reinhard Hütter, a professor at Duke Divinity, argued in a recent article that acedia is the vice at the root of the widespread use of and addiction to pornography. It is altogether unsurprising then that a book like 50 Shades of Grey would remain at the top of best-seller lists for weeks. Of course, when Professor Guroian's article was originally published iPhones and iPads were not ubiquitous. Take a ride on the DC metro any morning or evening rush hour and you'll find commuters catching up on their favorite television shows, most of which attempt to normalize vice and celebrate the typical, unhappy urbanite/suburbanite. As a throw back - if Ross and Chandler are also in constant existential crises, then it's cool that I am.

Rather than turning to great literature for inspiration or to "supplement and elevate worldly wisdom", people are turning to paperback smut or 45 minute, ego-stroking episodes to temporarily distract themselves from spiritual ennui. Missing, or in some cases avoiding, the opportunity to engage the questions posed by great literature, they drive themselves deeper into acedia.

One addition to the great list of suggested books might be Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew Crawford.
