Excellent article ! We are always told how much superiour the Moors must have been providing us with Aristotelian scriptures in the High Middle Ages. But I always wondered how those Arabs, if the were that smart, got outsmarted by those poor Christians. Brague finally explains ! What he does not touch on explicitely is a difference of "questioning-culture" and "authority-culture" : In the Islamic world up to this day pupils and students are told "to follow the masters words". This is a constant complaint of all "Western" scientists teaching to "Oriental" audiences : The Orient lacks a culture of questioning that grew in the West from the 15th century, i.e. Renaissance.
